The clouds that appear like cotton balls are altocumulus. These often produce fair weather and can be pretty high in the atmosphere, but not higher than a cirrocumulus cloud. The darker and lower-level clouds are stratocumulus. These are usually lower than 6,500 feet and can sometimes produce light rain or snow if the conditions are right.
