Nimbostratus can mean rain. The sunlight from above can't show through the moisture from within the cloud and that is why this cloud appears darker than a typical stratus cloud. Nimbostratus is also low-lying and is typically below 6,500 feet. There is a clearing ahead and that means a rain shower is passing or just coming through.
